Review: Did You Hear About the Morgans?

I was able to watch the advance screening of Did You Hear About the Morgans? last night, courtesy of Tessa of 2nd Avenue.

The story: Paul (Hugh Grant) and Meryl (Sarah Jessica Parker) Morgan are successful New Yorkers who are on the brink of a divorce. Paul is trying to win Meryl back, so they go out on a date. Date turns into a disaster as the couple witnesses the murder of Meryl’s client. The FBI immediately places them under Witness Protection, makes them surrender their Blackberries and the lives that they know, and sends the city-dwellers to a small town in Wyoming, where they learn to live the simple life.

Why this movie works? Two words: HUGH GRANT. I love Hugh Grant. He’s charming and his comedic timing is perfect. Hugh and Sarah Jessica don’t have much romantic chemistry, in my opinion. But it works. This Rom-Com is more Com than Rom. The few times the movie starts to get cheesy, Hugh saves it with some witty remark.

I thought the casting of the supporting characters was perfect. And the sub-stories were interesting but didn’t distract you from the main story. That’s something our local movie studios should learn.
